Clearly leadership efforts to increase engagement are not working, and a significant factor is that leaders don’t recognize the part they play in destroying employee engagement and passion.
As of today, only 29% of the American workforce is engaged, up just 2% from what it was five years ago. What should be of even greater concern to business leaders is that although almost everyone joins an organization as an engaged employee, less than six months later, fewer than 40% say they are engaged. What’s more, the longer the employee stays with an organization the lower that figure gets, until only 20% is engaged after ten years of service.
