Employee Engagement and the Virtual Workplace

By Canadian Management Centre

How does the virtual workforce change the dynamics, and our understanding, of employee engagement? When people interact mainly with a computer screen or rely heavily on electronic communications, behaviour changes and can impact employee engagement.

Virtual Distance is a measurable and predictable phenomenon growing among all workers. It is defined as the psychological distance that grows when we rely heavily on electronic communications to do our work - whether working right next door to one another, or thousands of kilometers away. When Virtual Distance is relatively high, employee engagement significantly declines.

Virtual Distance Leadership is key to improving employee engagement at all levels. Leaders need to understand the “rules” have changed with respect to the workplace and employee engagement models and management practices.
