Talking more, aligning less image

With more ways than ever to connect—emails, meetings, Slack messages, video calls—you’d think communication would be easier. But instead, teams are struggling more than ever to stay on the same page.

When messages aren’t clear, important details get lost, decisions get misunderstood, and work gets duplicated or delayed. The issue isn’t lack of communication—it’s lack of alignment.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re talking past people instead of with them, here are three ways to communicate for real impact.

The truth? Strategic thinking isn’t about having more time—it’s about making small shifts that create more space for big-picture thinking, no matter your role.

3 Ways to Communicate for Clarity, Influence, and Alignment

  1. Adapt Your Communication Style to Your Audience. Misalignment often happens because people communicate the way they prefer, not the way their audience needs. Some people need big-picture context, while others want just the facts. Some prefer quick decisions, while others need time to process.

    Before sending a message, ask:
    •    Is this the best use of my time right now?
    •    How does this connect to bigger goals?
    •    What’s one way I could approach this more strategically?

Small, intentional pauses help you break the habit of reacting and start training your brain to think strategically—even in the middle of a busy day.
  2. Make Your Ideas Stick with Storytelling. Facts inform, but stories persuade. If you want to drive alignment and influence decisions, data alone isn’t enough—you need to connect ideas to emotions and real-world impact. The next time you present an idea, try framing it like this:

    •     What’s at stake if we do nothing? (Creates urgency)
    •     How does this relate to something we already care about? (Builds connection)
    •     What’s the simplest way to explain this? (Keeps it memorable)

The more you flex your communication style, the more likely your message will land the way you intended.

  3. Clarify, Then Confirm Understanding. Assuming people understand something just because you said it is one of the biggest causes of misalignment. Instead of asking “Does that make sense?” (which often leads to silent nods), try:

    •    “What are your key takeaways from this?”
    •    “How would you explain this to someone else?”
    •    “What concerns or questions do you have before we move forward?”

Great communication isn’t just about getting your message across—it’s about ensuring it lands the way you intended.

Why This Works

Adding more meetings, messages, and emails won’t fix misalignment. But by adapting your style, making your ideas stick, and confirming understanding, you can communicate with real impact—no matter who you’re speaking to.
