Lay the groundwork for trust, connection, and confident leadership

Stepping into a new leadership role can be both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you were recently promoted or are managing people for the first time, the early days are when habits—and perceptions—start to form. The good news? You don’t need to have all the answers. What matters most is how you show up, communicate, and build relationships with your team.

If you're a new manager looking for a starting point, these foundational focus areas can help you lead with clarity and earn your team's trust.

1. Earn Trust

  • Be consistent and follow through. Say what you mean and do what you say. This builds reliability.
  • Be honest—even when it’s hard. Transparency builds credibility. If you don’t know something, say so.
  • Be fair. Treat everyone with the same level of respect and accountability.

2. Build Strong Relationships

  • Get to know your team members. Ask about their goals, strengths, frustrations, and working styles.
  • Schedule regular one-on-ones. Use these to listen, coach, and check in—not just to give status updates.
  • Give credit generously. Highlight wins and make people feel seen.

3. Lead with Confidence (Even When You're Still Figuring Things Out)

  • Be decisive when needed. Confidence grows when you make thoughtful choices and own them.
  • Ask smart questions. You don’t need all the answers—just a willingness to learn and grow.
  • Keep your focus on the big picture. Help your team understand how their work contributes to larger goals.

Bonus Tip: Share the “Why”. Your team is more likely to follow your lead when they understand the reasoning behind your decisions. Explain your thinking and invite theirs.
